Answer Formats

Answer formats represent the method by which a participant should answer a question. They are used for both question steps and form items (in a form step).

The table below summarizes the different answer formats. Details on how to configure and use these formats can be found in the individual answer format articles.

Answer Format Summary
Text Single or multi-line text entry, including validation against patterns (e.g. phone numbers). 
Numeric Whole and decimal numbers.
Text Choice

Select from a set list of choices.

Text Choice and Value Picker are similar, but Text Choice may be more suitable when you need:

  • A short list of choices that can fit on one screen.
  • Multiple selections (optional).
  • Expanded descriptions for each choice (optional).
Yes/No Choice Select from 'yes' or 'no'.
Scale (Discrete) Select from a numeric scale with fixed steps.
Scale (Continuous) Select from a numeric scale without fixed steps.
Date Dates, optionally including time of day.
Time of Day A time of day without a date.
Value Picker

Select from a set list of choices.

Value Picker and Text Choice are similar, but Value Picker may be more suitable when you need:

  • A long list of choices that requires scrolling through multiple screens.
File Upload Upload a file or capture an image, video, or audio.
Height Height measurements.
Weight Weight measurements.
Phone Number Stores a 10-digit value which can populate the MobilePhone demographic field, but displays it as a US phone number during input (e.g., (555) 777-8888).
