Connecting MyDataHelps Export Database to Tableau

In this video, you will learn how to connect the MDH Export Database to Tableau. You will go through the steps of accessing your credentials, configuring Tableau, and making a basic visualization. 

Prerequisites: Tableau Desktop License

Configure Access Credentials

  1. Access the Project Settings > Export Explorer > External Connection tab.
  2. Press the "Create Credentials" button in the Authentication section to create AWS Access Credentials. 
  3. Download and Install the correct ODBC driver for your operating system.
  4. Open the ODBC Data Source Administrator and click "Add" to add a new data source. Select Simba Athena ODBC Driver.
  5. Give your data source a name. Copy the configuration settings from the "Connection Information" section of the Export Explorer into the ODBC data source setup client. 
  6. Click "Authentication Options" on the ODBC data source setup client. Copy the authentication settings from the "Authentication" section of the Export Explorer into the ODBC data source setup client.

Configuring Tableau

  1. Open Tableau Desktop. Connect to a new data source by selecting To A Server > Other Databases (ODBC).
  2. Under Connect Using, select DSN and select the data source you just created from the dropdown. Click Connect.
  3. Select the schema and table that you wish to use for your visualization and build your Tableau Data Source.

You are now ready to use Tableau to build a daily dashboard for your project.
