Enrolling in Projects with MyDataHelps
Participants can enroll into MyDataHelps projects in a variety of ways. This article will cover enrollment from the participant’s perspective. For information about enrollment methods in MyDataHelps Designer, refer to the Enrollment Overview.
Joining a Project
Depending on the project settings, the participant can join a project in a few ways, captured in the following sections.
Accepting an Invitation
You can send an invitation to a participant, giving them a link to join the project. Here is the process:
- The coordinator sends an invitation. See inviting participants for more information. The participant will receive an email with a link to complete the initial survey via web browser.
- After the survey is completed, the participant can be directed to the MyDataHelps account registration page that contains the project branding (i.e., project name and logo).
If the participant already has a MyDataHelps account at the time of invitation, they can also find invitation while logged in, under the My Invitations section at the top of the MyDataHelps Account or Discover pages.
Completing a Recruitment Survey
Prior to officially joining a project, participants may be invited to complete a recruitment survey, which adds them to the list of project participants within MyDataHelps Designer. This method does not require them to access the app, create an account, or log in; however, depending on the purpose of the web survey, they may be directed to either create an account or complete another survey after completing the initial survey.
This survey should at a minimum capture the participant's contact information (i.e., email address and/or mobile phone number) so that you can contact them further. This survey often also captures basic demographic information, e.g., first and last name.
Using a Project Code or Join URL
If you've enabled "Allow Open Enrollment" in the project settings, participants can scan the QR code or use the URL to create an account and immediately join the project via web. Here is the process:
- The coordinator distributes the project's QR code or join URL to the participant (this could be done via flier or other media). This can be found in the project settings under Open enrollment.
- The participant is directed to the MyDataHelps account registration page that contains the project branding (i.e., project name and logo).
- After creating their account, they are prompted to complete the Enrollment Survey.
Alternatively, if you will require participants to download the mobile app before creating an account or completing enrollment, participants can scan the QR code or enter the alphanumeric code from the app registration page by clicking "Register with Code / Email / Phone" at the bottom.
Searching for a Public Project
If you've enabled "Show in Search" in the project settings, participants can find your project by searching in the public directory. Please contact us if you need this feature enabled.
To find a public project:
- The participant registers with MyDataHelps and logs in.
- The participant selects "Search for Health Projects" from the Account or Discover pages.
- The participant browses the projects shown or uses the search box at the top to find a specific one.
- The participant selects the project and reviews the project information.
- The participant completes enrollment.
Allowing Sensor Data Collection
If the project has enabled sensor data collection, MyDataHelps may prompt the participant for additional permissions depending on the data being collected. The default Home tab will display the option to connect any sensor data services that are enabled for the project, depending on the participant's device (i.e., Apple Health will only appear using the iOS app, Fitbit will display on all platforms, etc.). Sensor data can also be enabled from the participant Discover page in MyDataHelps, through a "Connect Device" View Builder component in any views you create, or the Connect Device step included in surveys after enrollment.
More detail on the participant experience of enabling and modifying sensor permissions can be found in Sharing Sensor Data from MyDataHelps.
